I’m forced to wonder if my original weight information was wrong. Because if it’s true, I lost ten pounds this past week. That just doesn’t seem right somehow. On the other hand, if it’s true, I’ll be done this diet in about three weeks, so one can always hope.
Now, if only weight watchers’ website would actually let me enter my new weight instead of just giving an error….
Week One Progress
20 May 2007 by tameushaw
Every time I’ve dieted, I’ve noticed huge losses the first week, followed by much slower progress the following weeks. I’m told this is primarily due to water losses or some other reason that seems somewhat counter-intuitive given I’ve usually increased my fluid consumption in that time.
In any case, congratulations.. or condolences on your loss. Whichever is appropriate.
I was talking to someone yesterday, who tried to explain the disconnect. Supposedly, if you don’t drink a lot normally, the body goes into dehydration mode; it doesn’t know when it’s gonna get its next glass of water, so it retains fluid. But if you drink more often and more regularly, it doesn’t have that need and so flushes the system, leading to weight loss there. Sounds kind of like the starvation mode of dieting, which doesn’t work since the body retains everything lest it run out of food before the starver eats again.
I’m definately drinking more, though. Weight Watchers lets you keep track of how much water you drink a day, up to 6 cups of water, and every day I’ve exceeded that. That’s probably 2 cups more than I’m used to drinking. Ironically, it seems to have made me more thirsty as I’ve gotten used to such fluid levels. Probably due to the same reasons given above.
